Dubai Residents May Experience Visa and Passport-Free Journeys in the Near Future!
Smart Technology is taking over the world and, in an attempt to make travelling easier, an integrated solutions provider Emaratech, is working on a system where Dubai residents can travel without visas or passports or any other travel documents through the airport! This system, which apparently will provide a seamless journey experience to the passengers, is being developed under the ownership of General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai (GDRFA Dubai), in partnership with Emirates Airlines and Dubai Airport.
Emaratech introduced this at the GITEX, a technology exhibition held in Dubai. As per their demonstration, passengers’ flight details and other information will be received by the GDRFA Dubai system even before the former reaches the airport. The system involves scanning of the passenger’s biometrics at the check-in counter. In this streamlined process, their travel itinerary and information will be provided, and they will proceed to check-in their luggage.
Instead of travel documents, the faces of the passengers will be considered as their identity. At the immigration, they can head directly to a smart gate, where their faces will be scanned – the only required and legitimate proof of their identity. This will be applicable at the boarding gate as well, where facial recognition and biometrics verify the identity of the traveller. All that the traveller has to worry about is their security check and no fines on their traveller profile – if this is sorted, flying out of the Dubai airport would be a cake walk!
The System’s Update
According to Emaratech, they are working on the timeline of the delivery of this system. While some components of the system such as the smart gate, which allows a seamless entry and exit at the Dubai Airport by GDRFA Dubai, are ready, the rest of the components are under discussion.
In September 2023, the Emirates Airline has said that by the end of the year, they might have the check-in through passenger identity ready. Dubai Airports are immersed in this project, where the latest biometric technology is utilised. The system is undergoing trials at the Dubai International Airport currently.
A similar biometric check-in system’s first phase was rolled out at the Abu Dhabi International Airport in 2022, and it allowed passengers to get a boarding pass and other services using facial scan.
Once this seamless journey system is implemented, it will be a revolutionary project in travels through airport, providing a hassle-free experience for travellers and a stronger surveillance for the airport authorities.
