Shamim Yusuf Kalarikkal's 'Why Sky is Not the Limit' Launched at SIBF 2023
Every year, Sharjah organises an international book fest named ‘Sharjah International Book Fair’, which attracts bibliophiles all over the world. Ever since its inception, the fair has been celebrated among book lovers across UAE. Recently, SIBF’s 42nd edition took place in the Sharjah expo center, and this time, it was special for the Al Nahda Center. Here’s why.
The General Manager of Al Nahda Center, Mr Shamim Yusuf Kalarikkal has always been an asset to our organisation. Through tremendous hard work and managerial skills, his contributions to the center have been phenomenal. Now, he has made all of us proud with the launch of his maiden book, ‘Why Sky is Not the Limit: Vignettes of a UAE Expat Who Shares Birthday with Host Country’. The book was released at the 42nd Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF2023).
What the Book is About
‘Why Sky is Not the Limit’ is a mix of life sketch, corporate learnings and transformation of UAE. Shamim’s parents came to Dubai in 1970, even before the formation of UAE. Incidentally, Shamim was born on the 2nd of December, 1971, on the UAE Formation Day. Ever since, he has an emotional connection with Dubai. Shamim has spent the 52 years of his life in the city and he is, without any doubt, quite proud of it.
When UAE and Shamim celebrated their 50th golden birthdays, the desire to show his love and compassion to his country dawn on to him. This led to the birth of his book. It has 21 chapters, starting from his early days in Dubai, some snippets about his Malayalee parents and family, followed by the vision and reformations of earlier and current UAE leaders, with the conclusion that there is much to achieve above the sky.
The UAE Shamim Has Known
Over the years, UAE has progressed so much, which other countries can envy about. The restructurings and progression plans put forward by UAE rulers are a kind of learning lessons for world leaders, entrepreneurs and general public. The laws and regulations implemented are standard for 11.48% Emiratis and 88.52% of foreigners living in the UAE, which makes a comfortable and safe environment for all. UAE is one such country where nationalities from more than 200 countries live, work and do business harmoniously.
The authorities take steps to amend rules concerned to operate business, making UAE a business-friendly country. The 3-trade license issuing jurisdictions - main land, freezone and offshore - modify and simplify the processes regularly to attract investors and businessmen to open business trade license in the UAE. Similarly, immigration has introduced various options of resident visas such as retirement visa, golden visa, freelance visa, mission visa and self-sponsor visa, which make the lives of expats convenient.
The investors can safely invest their funds to any real estate project and get eligibility to avail the 10-year golden visa. With its impeccable perks, the visa has attracted lots of foreigners to migrate to UAE. The city’s infrastructure, living standard, safety measures, availability of educational institutions, healthcare facilities and entertainment have made many expats consider UAE as their second home.
Shamim, as an expat, has witnessed the growth of UAE as a nation. He says that UAE is his first home and his children are extremely happy to have received good education and friends from the country. In fact, they have planned to continue their professional and personal lives in this exceptional nation.
Sharjah is recognized as the Cultural Capital of the Arab World by UNESCO in 1998. Living up to its title, Sharjah hosts events and fests related to literature, Arabic & Islamic Heritage and Education. The first SIBF was unveiled in 1982, and today, the fair is very prominent in the events calendar of Sharjah. SIBF 2023 holds its position as the world’s largest book fair in terms of buying and selling publishing rights for the third year. This year’s fair themed ‘we speak books’ welcomed visitors from 109 countries, marking the highest number of participating countries in its history.
The SIBF 2023 was held at Sharjah Expo Center from November 1st to 12th, 2023. Under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qassimi, the ruler of Sharjah Emirates, the fair is conducted every year. The ruler’s passion and dynamism for hosting the book fair annually and taking the event to an international level is remarkable. The statistics of number of authors, book publishers, activities, international guests and attendees at the book fair are growing each year, making the fair more popular, both locally and internationally. The organizing team behind the fair contributes a great deal for the success of the fair.
On November 5th, coincidentally on the day UAE was formed into a Union, Regency Group Chairman Shamsuddin Bin Muhiuddin presented the book to Mr Shamim’s mother Zaheeda Yusuf at SIBF 2023. Shamsuddin bin Muhiuddin praised Shamim for choosing the title ‘Why the Sky is Not the Limit’, as it was inspired by the words of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and the Ruler of Dubai.
The book Why Sky is Not the Limit is published by Lipi publications and edited by renowned Dubai-based journalist Bhaskar Raj. The book is available in all book stores across Dubai. It was Shamim’s three years of hard work which finally took shape. The Al Nahda Center, as a team, is proud of Mr Shamim and we congratulate him for this spectacular achievement
